Abstract |
Introduction :Sarcoma of the head and neck region is a very rare disease entity. This retrospective study investigated the clinical characteristics of head and neck sarcomas and analyzed its treatment methods and outcomes.
Subjects and Methods :Eighty-five patients who were diagnosed as sarcomas of the head and neck region in Shinchon Severance Hospital between 1985 and 2005 were included in the study. Data concerning age, sex, symp-toms, location and size of tumor, histopathologic characteristics, treatment methods, recurrence, and distant me-tastasis were reviewed.
Result :Overall 5 year survival rate was 38% and the 5 year survival rate in the pediatric population was 60%. The 5 year survival rates for each osteosarcoma and soft tissue sarcoma cases were 42% and 37% res-pectively. The 5 year survival rate was significantly higher in the cases where complete surgical resection was achieved.
Conclusion :In managing head and neck sarcomas, it is important to perform wide resection and to achieve complete resection. |
